It has been a really big year here at HODINKEE, and in the fake watch world at large. The year kicked off in high gear with with SIHH and Baselworld and never really lost any steam. Since this is the last episode of HODINKEE Radio for 2019 (and this decade), I wanted to try to wrap my brain around what 2019 means long term for watches. What, a decade from now, might we remember from this year. To get started, Cole, James, Jon, and I decided to play a little game. Grey wrote down a few questions on slips of paper, stuck them in a bowl, and turned on the mics ?from there, we took turns asking each other for insights and analysis into the past year. Some questions are personal, some are more general, but we ended up painting a pretty good portrait of the last 12 months.
After that, I was able to pull Ben and Joe into the studio for some additional big-picture analysis. Joe offered an overview of the financial state of the fake watch industry and how it's been impacted by global events, Ben reviewed the state of the auction world and the market for the most popular watches, and we all talked about what we hope to see in the coming decade. I won't spoil it too much, but the conversation is equal parts insightful and fun.
I also want to say a special "thank you" to everyone who tuned in and listened to the show this year. It's been a crazy ride from 2019's first episode (this chat with Max Büsser) right through to this episode. Every comment, every DM, every face-to-face conversation means a ton, so please keep the feedback coming. Grey and I are super excited to create even more incredible episodes in 2020 and we're already planning a few very special things for you too. We'll be taking next Monday, January 6, off, but we'll be back on January 13 with the first episode of 2020.
Enjoy this year in review and we'll see you next year!
